How to Read Tire Size: Sidewall Numbers Explained

Learning how to read tire size takes about a minute and saves you from ordering the wrong tires or overpaying. Every number you need is stamped right on the sidewall — here is exactly what each part means, explained by the team at Mike’s Tires Plano.

Where to find your tire size

Look at the outer sidewall of any tire for a string like P215/65R16 98H. The same size is also on the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb and in your owner’s manual. If the door-jamb size and the sidewall size differ, someone may have fitted the wrong tires — worth having checked.

How to read tire size, number by number

Using P215/65R16 98H as the example:

  • P — Tire type. “P” is passenger vehicle; “LT” is light truck; no letter is common on European (metric) sizing.
  • 215 — Section width in millimeters, from sidewall to sidewall.
  • 65 — Aspect ratio: the sidewall height is 65% of the width. A lower number means a shorter, sportier sidewall.
  • R — Construction type. “R” means radial, which is standard on virtually all modern tires.
  • 16 — Wheel diameter in inches. This tire fits a 16-inch wheel.
  • 98 — Load index (how much weight the tire can carry). 98 = 1,653 lbs per tire.
  • H — Speed rating. H is good to 130 mph; common ratings run S, T, H, V, W.

Why matching the size matters

Fitting the wrong size throws off your speedometer, can trigger warning lights, hurts handling, and on some vehicles rubs the fender or suspension. Load and speed ratings matter too — especially on SUVs and trucks that carry weight in the Texas heat. When in doubt, match the door-jamb spec exactly.

Can you change tire size?

Sometimes — a “plus size” (larger wheel, shorter sidewall) can improve looks and handling if the overall diameter stays close to stock. But get it verified first, because the wrong combination affects gearing, the speedometer, and safety systems. Our Plano techs can tell you in minutes what will fit your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Where is my tire size located?

On the outer sidewall of the tire and on the sticker inside the driver’s door jamb. Both should match.

What does the R in a tire size mean?

R stands for radial construction, the standard for modern tires. The number after it is the wheel diameter in inches.

Can I put a different size tire on my car?

Sometimes, if the overall diameter stays close to stock and the load and speed ratings meet your vehicle’s needs. Have it verified before buying to avoid speedometer and clearance problems.
