Spare tire mounted on a car

How Long Can You Drive on a Spare Tire? (And How Fast)

You have got a flat and you are riding on the little spare — so how long can you drive on a spare tire, and how fast is safe? For a temporary “donut” spare the answer is about 50 miles at up to 50 mph. Here is what you need to know before you get back on the road, from the team at Mike’s Tires Plano.

How long can you drive on a spare tire?

It depends on the type of spare:

  • Temporary (donut) spare: roughly 50 miles — just enough to reach a tire shop. It has minimal tread and thin construction, so it is not made for extended driving.
  • Full-size spare: can go much farther, but if it has been sitting for years, get it inspected and matched to your other tires soon.

Treat any spare as a get-to-the-shop solution, not a replacement.

How fast can you go on a spare tire?

Keep a donut spare under 50 mph. They are speed-rated for low speeds only, and going faster generates heat that can cause failure. Just as important, a donut has far less grip, so braking, cornering, and wet-road traction are all reduced — drive gently and avoid the tollway if you can.

Why the limits are so strict

A donut is smaller than your regular tires, which means it spins faster and can confuse your ABS, traction control, and (on AWD vehicles) the drivetrain. Extended or high-speed use on a mismatched spare can damage those systems — another reason to head straight for a repair.

Check your spare before you need it

Spares lose air just sitting in the trunk. Check your spare’s pressure monthly (donuts often need a high 60 PSI — see the sticker on the spare) so it is ready when you actually need it. A flat spare is the worst roadside surprise.

Frequently asked questions

How long can you drive on a donut spare tire?

About 50 miles — just far enough to reach a shop. Donut spares are temporary and not built for extended driving.

How fast can you drive on a spare tire?

Keep a donut spare under 50 mph. Higher speeds build heat and risk failure, and the spare has less grip for braking and cornering.

Is it safe to drive on a spare on the highway?

Only briefly and under 50 mph. It is better to take slower surface streets to the nearest tire shop and get the flat fixed.
