How Long Do Tires Last? Mileage, Age & Texas Heat

One of the most common questions we hear at Mike’s Tires Plano is simple: how long do tires last? The short answer is 3 to 5 years or 25,000–50,000 miles for most drivers — but Texas heat, your driving habits, and maintenance can move that number a lot. Here is what actually determines tire lifespan.

Mileage vs. age — both matter

Tires wear out two ways: by tread wear (miles) and by age (rubber hardening). Most passenger tires are built for 25,000 to 50,000 miles, and many come with a mileage warranty. But even if the tread looks fine, most manufacturers recommend replacing tires at 6 years and consider 10 years the absolute maximum, because aged rubber cracks and loses grip.

Why Texas heat shortens tire life

Heat is rubber’s enemy. Plano’s long, hot summers and scorching pavement accelerate the aging process, especially on tires that are parked outside or run under-inflated. That is why a tire that might last 6 years in a mild climate can age faster here — and why regular checks matter more in North Texas.

What makes tires wear out faster

  • Under- or over-inflation — the #1 avoidable cause of premature wear
  • Skipped rotations — front and rear tires wear at different rates
  • Poor alignment — drags tires and wears one edge
  • Aggressive driving — hard braking and fast cornering
  • Heat and sun exposure — especially for outdoor-parked vehicles

How to make your tires last longer

  1. Keep them at the recommended PSI (check monthly, cold)
  2. Rotate every 5,000–7,500 miles
  3. Get an alignment check once a year or after hitting a bad pothole
  4. Have them balanced when you notice vibration
  5. Check tread and sidewalls for cracks regularly

How to tell it is time

Replace your tires when tread hits 2/32″ (the Texas legal minimum), when you see the wear bars, when the sidewalls show cracking, or when they pass the 6-year mark. If you are not sure, we will check the age code and tread for free.

Frequently asked questions

How many miles should tires last?

Most passenger tires last 25,000 to 50,000 miles depending on the tire, your driving, and maintenance. Check the tire’s mileage warranty for its rating.

Should I replace tires by age even if the tread is good?

Yes. Most manufacturers recommend replacement at 6 years and a 10-year maximum, because rubber hardens and cracks with age even with tread remaining.

Does Texas heat really shorten tire life?

It does. High heat and sun accelerate rubber aging, so tires in Plano can wear and age faster than in cooler climates — making regular checks important.
